Lawrence J. Hoffman, MAcc, CPA, CGM


Lawrence is the founder and owner of Lawrence J. Hoffman, CPA, P.C. a boutique accounting and consulting firm based in the Washington, D.C. area. The firm specializes in forensic accounting services including fraud investigations and preventive services, litigation support and expert testimony, business valuations and due diligence, and insolvency and reorganization services. The firm also provides audit, accounting, tax and other consulting services to commercial businesses, nonprofit organizations, governmental entities, employee benefit plans, and individuals and estates. Lawrence has 40 years of forensic accounting, audit and accounting, and tax experience in public accounting and the private sector. He began his career with Coopers & Lybrand (now PWC) in Washington, D.C. Lawrence founded his own firm in 1982, which grew in seven years to a Top 25 firm in the Washington D.C. area where he developed a nationally recognized forensic accounting and consulting practice. Lawrence was one of the early members of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners and the National Association of Certified Valuators and Analysts. Lawrence is also an associate professor of accounting with Mount St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, Maryland where he also develops and teaches forensic accounting courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Lawrence has been involved in numerous high-profile cases as a consulting and testifying expert. He has performed forensic accounting services for governmental entities, public and private companies, nonprofits and individuals for over 30 years. He has performed forensic services in support of litigation and claims for lost earnings and profits, business interruption, shareholder disputes, intellectual property infringement, bankruptcy and restructuring and structural settlements; assistance with interrogatories, document requests and depositions; and serving as an expert witness. Lawrence has conducted and led teams of forensic accountants on fraud investigations ranging from small family-owned businesses to large governmental organizations with losses of over $500 million. He has performed and supervised valuations for individuals, estates and public and closely held companies in numerous industries. Lawrence has also assisted companies and nonprofits with restructuring and turnaround situations, including recapitalizations, reorganizations and liquidations. Lawrence is a CPA licensed in the Commonwealth of Virginia. He is also a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE), Certified in Financial Forensics (CFF) by the AICPA, a Certified Valuation Analyst (CVA), holds the Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA) designation from the AICPA, and a Private Investigator (PI) licensed by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services. Lawrence has a Bachelor of Science in accounting from Mount St. Mary’s University, a Masters in Accounting (MAcc) from Stetson University, and a Graduate Certificate in Forensic Accounting from Southern New Hampshire University. He is a frequent speaker, lecturer and instructor with various professional and educational organizations and has authored numerous articles on various topics in forensic accounting. Lawrence has also served as an adjunct professor with several universities and colleges. Lawrence is also a private pilot and a member of the Board of Directors of Mercy Medical Airlift. He has volunteered and completed numerous missions for Angel Flight and for animal rescue organizations Lawrence has been very active during his career with assisting numerous nonprofit organizations as a volunteer, board member, and trusted advisor. He is a member of International Country Club in Fairfax, Virginia and is an avid golfer.
